Argan oil is known as 'Moroccan gold', and certainly not without reason. In hair care, it is one of the most widely used natural oils: it adds shine, softens dry hair, and tames frizzy ends. But how do you use argan oil in your hair without making it sticky or greasy? In this guide, you will read exactly what argan oil can do for your hair, how to apply it step-by-step, and what is best to choose for your hair type.
What does argan oil do for your hair?
Argan oil is cold-pressed from the nuts of the argan tree, which grows naturally in Morocco. The oil contains, among other things, unsaturated fatty acids (such as oleic acid and linoleic acid) and vitamin E. Because of this composition, argan oil absorbs relatively quickly and feels lighter than many other oils. These are the main benefits for your hair:
- More shine: A small amount smooths the hair, making the light reflect more beautifully.
- Softer, more supple hair: The oil helps retain moisture in the hair, so that dry hair feels less stiff.
- Less frizz: Especially with curly and frizzy hair, a few drops in the lengths make a big difference.
- Well-cared-for ends: argan oil cannot “repair” split ends, but it makes the ends smoother and less brittle, making them look healthier.
- Protection when styling: A little oil on the lengths forms a layer that helps protect your hair against dryness and friction.
Please note: argan oil is a conditioning product and not a medicine. If you suffer from persistent hair loss or an irritated scalp, seek advice from a general practitioner or dermatologist.
Which argan oil do you choose for your hair?
Choose 100% pure, cold-pressed cosmetic argan oil. This is a different oil from the argan oil you use in the kitchen: that one is roasted and meant for food. For your hair, you want unroasted oil in a dark bottle, because light makes the oil age faster.
At Be Artisan Benelux you will find pure argan oil from Morocco, for example the Argan Oil 100% Pure 50ml to try out first, or the 100ml variant if you use it daily. Do you like a lovely scent? Then the oils with aromas such as orange blossom or rose are a luxury alternative. You can find more options in our oil collection.
Using argan oil in your hair: 4 ways
1. As a leave-in for the lengths and ends
This is the easiest and most commonly used method. Put 2 to 3 drops in your palms, rub them warm, and run them through the lengths and ends of slightly damp or dry hair. Stay away from the hair roots so that your hair does not become greasy.
2. As a pre-wash treatment (before shampooing)
Work 1 to 2 teaspoons of argan oil through your hair (lengths and ends, optionally a little on the scalp). Leave it in for 30 minutes to an hour, then wash your hair as usual. This is ideal for dry or damaged hair. For this, use a mild, sulfate-free shampoo, so that your hair doesn't dry out again. Read also why sulfate-free shampoo is such a good choice.
3. As a scalp massage
Massage a few drops into your scalp with small circular movements. The massage itself feels relaxing and stimulates blood circulation. Don’t do this too often if your scalp gets oily quickly: once a week is enough for most people.
4. Mixed with your conditioner
Mix 1 to 2 drops of argan oil with a small amount of conditioner and use this as an extra nourishing mask. Our creamy conditioner with argan oil, shea butter and coconut oil fits well with this.
How much argan oil do you need per hair type?
The secret is: start small. You can always add more, but you can only remove excess oil with extra washing. Use this table as a guideline:
| Hair type | Leave-in | Pre-wash treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Fine and thin hair | 1 to 2 drops, only the ends | 1 teaspoon, 30 minutes |
| Normal hair | 2 drops, lengths and ends | 1 teaspoon, 30 to 60 minutes |
| Dry or damaged hair | 3 to 4 drops, lengths and ends | 2 teaspoons, 1 hour |
| Curly or frizzy hair | 3 to 5 drops on slightly damp hair | 2 teaspoons, 1 hour |
| Oily hair | 1 drop, only the very ends | Only on the lengths, not on the scalp |
How often can you use argan oil in your hair?
You can use argan oil daily as a leave-in for the ends if your hair is dry. It is best to do a pre-wash treatment once a week or every two weeks. Do you notice that your hair becomes flatter or greasier after a few days? Then you are probably using too much or too often: reduce the amount or use it less frequently.
5 common mistakes with argan oil in the hair
- Using too much oil. Two drops are often enough for the ends.
- Starting at the roots. Always work from the lengths upwards, and with oily hair, stay away from the roots.
- Using a roasted (kitchen) oil. Choose cosmetic, cold-pressed argan oil.
- Not rinsing it out properly after a pre-wash. Shampoo twice if the oil is not completely gone after one wash.
- Expecting it to work the first time. You only really see the difference in shine and softness after a few weeks of regular use.
Argan oil or almond oil for your hair?
Undecided between argan oil and almond oil? Argan oil is lighter and absorbs faster, making it particularly suitable for shine, frizz, and the ends. Almond oil is somewhat creamier and very suitable for pre-wash treatments. In our article argan oil vs almond oil we set out the differences side by side.

Frequently asked questions about argan oil for hair
Can you use argan oil in your hair every day?
Yes, you can use a small amount (1 to 3 drops) daily on the lengths and ends. Avoid the hair roots and adjust the amount according to your hair type.
Do you need to rinse out argan oil?
As a leave-in, do not: leave a few drops in your hair. For a pre-wash treatment, rinse the oil out with shampoo.
Is argan oil suitable for oily hair?
Yes, but use very little, only on the very ends, and not on the scalp if you have oily roots quickly.
Does argan oil help with split ends?
You cannot repair split ends, only cut them off. However, argan oil makes the ends smoother and more supple, so they are less likely to split further and look well-groomed.
Can I use argan oil on wet or dry hair?
Both are possible. The oil distributes most evenly on slightly damp hair, while on dry hair you use it primarily to tame frizz and add shine.
How long does it take before you see results?
You usually see shine and softness immediately after use. You will see a lasting difference in how well-cared-for your hair feels after a few weeks of regular use.
